Healing Didn't Happen All at Once

She thought healing meant finally leaving the pain behind. Instead, she discovered that healing happens little by little—in setting boundaries, giving herself grace, and learning that progress doesn't have to be perfect.

She kept waiting for the day when she would finally feel healed.

She imagined healing would arrive like some big announcement. One morning she would wake up, the pain would be gone, the memories wouldn't sting anymore, and everything that had hurt her would somehow make sense.

But that morning never came.

Instead, healing showed up quietly.

It showed up the first time she said no without spending the rest of the day feeling guilty about it.

It showed up when she stopped explaining herself to people who had already decided not to understand her.

It showed up when she realized that protecting her peace didn't make her difficult.

And sometimes, healing looked a lot less inspirational.

Sometimes it looked like crying in the car, wiping her face, and walking into the grocery store like she hadn't just had an entire therapy session with herself in the parking lot. 😂

That was when she began to understand:

Maybe healing wasn't one big moment.

Maybe it was a hundred small ones.

the process

Healing ISN’T LINEAR

Some days she felt strong enough to talk about what happened without her voice shaking.

Other days, one memory, one song, or one unexpected moment could make the hurt feel brand new again.

At first, those days frustrated her.

She thought going backward meant she wasn’t healing.

But eventually she realized she wasn’t going backward at all.

She was simply human.

Healing didn’t mean she would never feel pain again. It meant the pain no longer got to make every decision for her.

She could miss someone and still know they didn’t belong in her life.

She could forgive and still keep the boundary.

She could have a hard day without calling herself a failure.

She could rest without believing she was giving up.

And she could be proud of how far she had come while admitting there were still parts of her that needed time.

That was the part nobody really told her about healing.

You don’t have to be completely healed to keep living.

You don’t have to have every scar figured out before you deserve peace.

And you certainly don’t have to pretend everything is okay just because somebody asks, “You over that yet?” 😂

Sometimes progress is simply realizing that something that once controlled your entire life now only visits occasionally.

She wasn’t finished healing.

She was learning how to live while she healed.

And maybe that was progress too.

Your turn

What Does Healing Look Like For You Right Now?

Healing doesn’t always look like forgetting what happened or never hurting again. Sometimes it looks like setting a boundary, giving yourself grace, resting when you need to, or realizing that something which once controlled you doesn’t have the same power anymore.

Reflection question:
What is one small sign that shows you are healing, even if you still have more healing to do?
